Seagate terminal adapter
A faster Seagate terminal that finds the drive's voltage on its own Datacodex WinFOF Terminal
A USB to TTL terminal we designed from scratch for Seagate firmware work. It matches the drive's logic level automatically, runs up to 3,000,000 baud, and lets your software switch drive power off and on while you work. Tap the markers on the board to see what each part does.

CP2102N bridge
UP TO 3,000,000 baudThe fastest and most stable USB to UART bridge in its class, and we use its latest revision. It reaches 3,000,000 baud when the software and the drive support it, tested at that speed with MRT and PC-3000.
Signal path
Data on one path, power on another
TX and RX run from the CP2102N through the level buffers to the drive's terminal port. When the software needs a power cycle, it toggles DTR, which goes through the inverter to the MOSFET that switches drive power. No unplugging, no reaching for the PSU.
Inside the board
Current parts where older boards used legacy logic
The drive sets the level, the terminal follows
Pick the voltage of the drive's terminal port and watch the buffer adapt its signal level. No jumpers, no switches.
What baud rate means at the bench
Approximate time to move 1 MB at each speed. High rates need support from both the software and the drive.
Tested at 3,000,000 baud with MRT and PC-3000.
| Part | Typical boards | Datacodex WinFOF Terminal |
|---|---|---|
| USB bridge | Older-generation chips | CP2102N, latest revision |
| Top speed | Limited by the chip | Up to 3,000,000 baud |
| Signal level | Usually fixed at 3.3V | Auto 1.8 / 2.5 / 3.3V |
| Inverter | 74LVC04 or 74LVC124 | Modern part, works from 1.8V |
What is a Seagate terminal adapter?
The tool HDD repair technicians search for
Every Seagate drive has a serial diagnostic port next to the SATA connector, with three pins: TX, RX and GND. Technicians call it the terminal, or the COM port. Repair software talks to the firmware through it to deal with problems like a drive stuck in BSY, LED:000000CC errors, Capacity 0, or a damaged System Area.
To reach that port from a PC you need a USB to TTL adapter that speaks the drive's logic level. In the trade it goes by many names: Seagate terminal adapter, WinFOF terminal, Seagate COM port adapter, USB-TTL terminal, or HDD terminal board. Datacodex WinFOF Terminal is that adapter, built for WinFOF and the other Seagate repair suites, with software power control on board.
Compatibility
Works with the software you already use
We sell the terminal only. The software listed above is not included, and the terminal is built for Seagate drives.

FAQ
Before you order
Does it come with WinFOF?
No. We sell the terminal only. Get the software from its vendor.
How is it different from a generic USB to TTL cable?
A generic cable usually runs at a fixed level and lower speed, and you still need loose wires and a separate PSU. This terminal detects the drive's level, reaches 3,000,000 baud, connects through a SATA socket and pogo pins, and lets the software control drive power.
Does it work with Seagate drives that use a 1.8V terminal?
Yes. The buffers detect 1.8V, 2.5V and 3.3V automatically with nothing to set.
Which baud rate should I start with?
Connect at the drive's default rate, then raise it from the software if both the drive and the software support higher speeds, up to 3,000,000 baud.
What power does it need?
A single 12V input on the green screw terminal. The board makes its own 5V with an MP1584EN converter.
Does it need a driver?
It uses the official Silicon Labs CP210x driver.
